The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is more commonly, and more simply, known as Baltimore Basilica. It was the first Roman Catholic cathedral to be built in America. Constructed between 1806 and 1863 to a design by BH Latrobe, it is Neoclassical in style and has a large dome.
This powerful dove surrounded by a circle of gold is the centrepiece of the large dome of the Basilica.
