St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney
Officially named Cathedral Church and Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians, this church is more simply known as St Mary's Cathedral. The original building was destroyed by fire and the current building begun in 1866. Unusually this Cathedral is laid out in a north/south axis due to the geography of the land it occupies. Construction of St Mary's took over 60 years, in several stages. Even then it was not complete with the spires being added as recently as 2000.
